In this musical spoof, Bud and Doug, aspiring playwrights, present a backers’ audition for their sensational musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts using a "cloakroom full of hats” with the names of the characters written on them. They hope that one of the attending producers will give them a Broadway contract. Instead of actually being the story of Johann Gutenberg, it is the story of Bud and Doug. They think they have written the best musical ever. They are innocent but passionate (and broke).
